Twelve Doors of Mayfair
Each year I treat myself to an advent calendar of some description, usually a fairly simple one with a little tasty something behind each cardboard door… but have you ever wondered what it would be like to step inside a real advent calendar… with real doors made by real people, concealing the most wonderful and special treats & experiences behind each one…? Have you?
Well, I bring good tidings, for you have just entered one.
My advent calendar – the Twelve Doors of Mayfair – which I will be sharing with you over the next twelve days, is full size . And the doors are certainly big enough for you to step through. I invite you to join me on a Christmassy adventure, as we peek behind twelve of the most glorious doors of one of the most beautiful parts of London town – Mayfair. Behind each door lies something wonderful, which will warm us, excite us and make us tingle from top to bottom with anticipation of a most magical Christmas waiting for us at the end of this month…
The first door of Mayfair is the overwhelmingly beautiful entrance to the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, where I was lucky enough to spend the night in one of their suites and indulge in an extremely luxurious breakfast in bed…
This hotel has recently emerged like a beautiful butterfly, after a two year multimillion-pound refurbishment, which has lovingly restored the Sheraton Grand to its former dazzling glory. Walking into the hotel, I felt as though I’d been transported back in time to the roaring twenties, with stunning authentic art deco details and features everywhere I looked – the lamps shaped like paper scrolls, the grand pillars…. and even the carpet design had me skipping along like Tallulah and wondering where Bugsy was hiding.
This beautiful Art Deco hotel (it first opened in 1927) is nestled in the heart of London Mayfair, facing Green Park and just a hop, skip and a jump away from Buckingham Palace, should you wish to pop in to tea…
Everything about this hotel whispers luxury, and I found myself melting into fabric and charm of the place… The attention to detail is extraordinary, from the precise placement of my teaspoon by my cup of tea, to the delicious chocolate on my pillow, waiting for me when I came back to my room after an early evening stroll…
All the rooms have been lovingly sprinkled with 1920’s glamour dust (yes, it’s a thing) during the refurbishment, but also have taken great care to spare no modern touch. The rooms come with a free ‘handy’ smartphone that you can take out and about with you and use the free wifi… and I of course spotted the minibar, packed with everything you can imagine, a Nespresso machine, plenty of biscuits and Molton Brown toiletries. Oh, and can I just mention the rain shower? AMAZE.
There’s something about unpacking a suitcase in a hotel room, and putting everything away in its place, that makes you feel like you’re properly on holiday – even if it’s just for a day – and that is when the relaxation can properly start.
I have also taken to packing my own slippers when I stay anywhere, which makes me feel instantly at home…
Waking up slowly in a dreamy marshmallow bed, reading the papers (which had been delivered that morning to my room) in my cashmere pyjamas and watching people silently drift through Green Park from my bedroom window from this extraordinary hotel, was the perfect beginning to my first day in Mayfair…
… I revelled in my lazy breakfast, sipped my morning coffee and couldn’t wait to see what the rest of the day had in store for me…
