Smørrebrød & liquorice lattes at Snaps & Rye

A few days ago I found myself in one of my favourite parts of town and my old stomping ground, Golborne Road. I lived just off this street for around ten years, before moving to North London a little over a year ago…
In those 10 years I saw Golborne Road and the area around it change dramatically, with new places to shop, eat and drink popping up all the way down the street… and one of the new arrivals in 2014 was Snaps + Rye – the only Danish restaurant in London.
I met Liana there (my aunt and comrade) for brunch… and as soon as we saw the menu we were in trouble. Everything on it was our favourite food. And that’s not an exaggeration. I could happily live on herring, eggs and rye bread… and now it seems I can add liquorice lattes to that list.
And I’m not even a fan of liquorice, so this was a bit of a surprise.

Snaps + Rye is the baby of husband and wife team, Kell (Danish) and Jacqueline (British) who have set about creating a little corner of Copenhagen in West London. And they have totally achieved this.
Everything is cooked on site and they only work with fresh, sustainable produce. As well as supporting British suppliers, they also import a selection of authentic Danish food and drinks, including Helt honey, Lakrids liquorice and Sealand Birk birch sap juice… which is also delicious. And another new favourite thing. (LONG LIST).

Snaps + Rye also encapsulates the Danish word and ethos, ‘hygge‘, which is essentially the Danish concept of coziness….

Kell explains ‘hygge’ in his own words – “It’s so much more than just cosiness. It’s where all your senses are evoked by just feeling good. Good company, friends, candlelights, it’s a time / place where you have no worries, you are just really content.”
And that is Snaps + Rye in a nutshell.
A very Danish nutshell.

Snaps + Rye is firmly on my wishlist – Golborne Rd isn’t that far away from me so I should just suck it up and go next weekend! I love the Danish word maps and the kedgeree and rarebit look particularly tempting through the lens of your beautiful photos. xx
