Discovering Wonderful Wimbledon Village… it’s not just for The Wombles

One of the hardest things I have found about the last year or so, is not being able to get out and explore London. It’s one of my favourite things. It fills me with excitement and the sense of possibility and opportunity. My favourite parts of London are those villages which have lovely local and independent businesses on the high street. Maybe a gorgeous coffee shop, or if you’re really lucky, a book shop…

But where it gets really exciting is when you find a corner of London where the community thrives because of all the local businesses it has on its doorstep. There’s no need to hop on the bus or the train – everything you need is right there… and these London villages are extremely wonderful places to live, if you’re lucky enough to do so.

One such village is Wimbledon Village, where The Mansions in Wimbledon Hill Park stands proudly, offering luxury homes for people who want to live a stone’s throw away from the gorgeous village, full of cafés, shops and boutiques, which are set amongst striking period buildings and gorgeous open and green spaces. I visited the area a couple of weeks ago and fell in love with its charm, Wimbledon Common and the myriad of hidden gems I had no idea about…

The Mansions is a fabulous collection of luxury apartments sitting amid swathes of green parkland. To live in London and be surrounded by nature and oodles of space is a luxury within itself, but add to that its beautiful landscaped gardens, its proximity to Wimbledon Village, a concierge service, a private cinema, gym and underground parking and you might feel as though you’ve hit the jackpot. 

Wimbledon is brilliantly connected transport-wise. Buses, trains, the tube, you name it – it’s very easy to zip into London and at the same time you are on the doorstep of some fabulous green space. To give you some context, it’s 21 mins on the train to Victoria and 17 mins to Waterloo… wow, I miss trains. There are wonderful schools, cafes, restaurants…a cinema… *considers moving to Wimbledon Village…*

As well as all of this, illustrious postcode SW19 also has an intriguing story behind it, which you can discover different bits of, depending on which history books you read…and many of the street names have wonderful stories and anecdotes behind them. 

The area is well known for being the place where writer Raymond Briggs and actors Martin Clunes and Oliver Reed were born… and of course, those cheeky Wombles also made their home in this spot. But much longer ago, it was the ancient Greeks and Romans who settled in Wimbledon. And there is evidence that there used to be an enormous iron fortress built on Wimbledon Common! Sadly there was no Instagram then, so I have no snapshots to share with you 😉
