Does these tiles look familiar to you? It’s no wonder, as the brilliant Bert & May have wiggled themselves well and truly into the forefront of the British Design industry and their stunning reclaimed and handmade tiles have been snapped up and splashed all over many a popular haunt… think Cowshed Spa, Selfridges, The Conran Shop and Jamie’s Italian, to name but a few…
Yesterday I popped over to the thriving Vyner Street in the heart of East london, to visit their showroom, dribble over all the gorgeousness and plot how many tiles I can sneak into the flat before LM realises there’s no inch of blank wall left. Ba ha ha ha ha.
Lee Thornley is the driving-force behind Bert & May and pioneered their growing arm – Bert & May Materials. He sources all their reclaimed wood and of course the encaustic, reclaimed and bespoke tiles with their bright, vibrant colours and patterns, which could only be Bert & May.
The Vyner Street warehouse is a tile-lover’s heaven. Stacks of beautiful designs everywhere you look and a number of hidden gems, which have been sourced from far flung places…
The in-house design team (you can wave to them from the shop floor) are divided into designers of new tile collections and specialists dedicated to providing bespoke tile design for trade customers… clever chaps.
I dream of having tiles like this in my home – on the bathroom floor, in the garden (if I had one) around an old fireplace (if I had one) or perhaps just as a splashback in the kitchen. (More realistic.) There are dozens and dozens of different designs to choose from… and the really good news is that if you fall utterly in love with a tile that is out of stock, they can have a crack at creating a bespoke version just for you.
So there’s no excuse – there’s a Bert & May tile for everyone!
Now please excuse me while I measure up my bathroom floor…

Lovely piece Poppy! Thanks for the credit. I did another shoot recently of some of the tiles on location at the Artist Residence hotel in Victoria and Trillo cafe in Peckham. They look wonderful when they are installed well.
