A new brekky in town at German Gymnasium

There is something about walking into German Gymnasium in Kings Cross, that makes me feel like great things are happening around me. There are businessy meetings with scribbles in notebooks and laptops being tapped on, creatives chatting and laughing and definitely coming up with the Next Big Thing, families, friends… and always lots of chattering and buzzing – up at the bar, at around all the tables and there’s just something in the air… so do I love going there? Yes I do. And was I excited to hear they had a new breakfast menu this month? Why, yes I was and I was there in a shot. With Ben. Because he loves brekky too.

The new menu puts a unique German spin on some of our morning favourites – one of my favourites was the Eggs Benedict with a different twist. It comes with tender ham, poached eggs, and a delicious velvety hollandaise sauce served on a crispy potato Rösti – no muffin in sight. Nuffin muffin. It was delicious and actually, I prefer the dish this way. The rösti was golden and crispy too – I loved the texture as well as the flavours. Definitely order this one when you go!

For an even more authentic German experience, we delved into ‘München Morning’, which featured two poached Weißwurst sausages, accompanied by parsley, sweet mustard, and a traditional Breze (pretzel). And if they sold the sauce, I would have bought a jar. Or 4.

I ordered the Heidelberg, which came with avocado, spinach, quinoa, feta, tomato, dark rye and hot sauce – absolutely delicious and a perfect way to balance the richness of the other dishes.

German Gymnasium, a beautiful Grade 2 Listed historical building, is right outside Kings Cross station, so it’s the perfect place to meet a friend before or after work, or on a weekend, when you can mooch about the market afterwards and walk off the enormous breakfast you had 🙂

The building is divided into 3 parts – the Grand Café, where we had breakfast, the upstairs restaurant and the Meister Bar, where you can settle in and enjoy an array of beverages, including quite the selection of German beer.

One to pop firmly on your radar – and definitely book for brekky. It’s sehr lecker 🙂
