The Tenth Door of Mayfair… Silver Shoes, Sparkle and a Birdcage Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea is always a gorgeously decadent treat, no matter where you are… But there’s something about the Palm Court at the Sheraton Grand London Park Lane, with its stupendous Art Deco features, harp player (yes) and crackling fires, that takes afternoon tea to a whole other glamorous, stylish and fabulously elegant level…

In 1913 the building of the hotel began, however construction had to come to a grinding halt because of the First World War. The steel frame had already gone up and stood looking like a grand birdcage on Piccadilly… thus becoming the hotel’s nickname and today the hotel still pays homage to that having named its afternoon tea, the ‘Birdcage Afternoon Tea‘.
And it is exquisite.

It was not until over 10 years later, in 1924, that the mayor of London (Mr Bracewell-Smith) bought the ‘birdcage’ structure and work could recommence on this fabulous Art Deco hotel we love today…

The sandwiches were all completely divine. I had one of everything (obviously) and could have eaten them all! But I had to save room for the things I get most excited about – the scones. Always, the scones…

Everything about this afternoon tea is special. It’s more than special. It’s the most special. They have managed to strike the most wonderful balance between glamour and cosy… and that, my friends, is not easy to do.
I could have say on those sink-in-able chairs and sofas forever, but the great outdoors was calling me, and with only two doors of Mayfair left, a stroll in the fresh air (and to walk off a those amazing cakes!) was a welcome notion indeed.
Until tomorrow…
p.s. Take advantage of their wonderful festive offer: Birdcage Afternoon Tea with free flowing Chapel Down Bubbles – £45 per person. You can also buy Birdcage Afternoon Tea vouchers directly from the hotel. (Perfect Christmas present!)
