Ice Skating at Somerset House (and so much more…)

You know Christmas is on its way when you find yourself swoosh swoosh swooshing over the ice at Somerset House. It’s one of my main ‘Christmas is Coming’ indicators. Others include buying the Radio Times, stocking up on mince pies… and then eating mince pies for breakfast because I Can. Not. Wait.
Ice Skating in London fills me with sparkle – the nostalgic romance of it conjures up images of Doris Day, 1950s skirts and ponytails… it transports me to another time of gentle courtship… and a date on the ice would have been magical…
And the most magical rink of all is at Somerset House – a stunning 18th century building and backdrop, complete with cocktails, blinis, hot chocolate and fondue in Fortnum’s Lodge, overlooking the rink….

The skating experience at Somerset House is full of hidden surprises and secrets – there is late night skating, which sees DJs from the best international clubs and record labels take over the rink-side decks… there are jazz nights, a skate school, pop up shopping in The Christmas Arcade and Fortnum Lodge and delicious yummies in the après-Skate restaurant and bar…

There are special Tuesday Treats nights, with shopping events and offers, such as cocktail workshops and food tasting sessions… there are also opportunities to ‘Meet The Maker’ each week, where Fortnum’s skilled artisans will be on hand to answer any questions about their crafts…

You can also choose to purchase ‘Skate Extras’ such as ‘Champagne & Chocolate Truffles’ or my favourite – ‘Champagne & Smoked Salmon Blini Package’ which includes a large, freshly baked breakfast Blini with a generous helping of Smoked Salmon (house cured on the roof at Fortnum’s Piccadilly) and topped with crème fraiche and kept caviar. HEAVEN!
