I am a mega fan of meatballs. There is something about them that speaks to the child in me and I get actually excited. Meatballs and spaghetti! Meatballs and spaghetti! This time, I’ve made these with turkey mince… and love them! (And so does Isabelle – win!) Although I’ve traditionally made meatballs with beef, in my drive to be more healthy and shop more frugally, I’ve made the switch to turkey mince… and am so happy with the results.
Turkey mince is such an easy swap from other meat, into so many simple and everyday dishes – bolognese, lasagne, you name it. Plus, it is healthy (ding!) affordable (ding ding! BABIES ARE EXPENSIVE!!) and super-duper packed full of flavour. Oh, and when you’re in your local supermarket hunting down your turkey mince, do keep your eye out for the purple labelling with the Union Jack, to make sure you’re buying British.
RECIPE
For the meatballs
- 400g British turkey mince
- 4 tbsp breadcrumbs (or you can swap in oats if you fancy)
- 1tbsp finely chopped onion
- 1 garlic glove, crushed
- 1 egg
- 3 tbsp grated parmesan
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & Pepper to taste
Mix everything together in a bowl and then roll into balls.
Add them to a pan with a little hot oil (I use olive oil but any will do) and turn gently until brown… then add to the sauce to finish cooking.
For the sauce
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- Garlic clove, crushed
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Glug of Worcestershire sauce (to taste)
- Glug of balsamic vinegar (to taste)
- Extra water, if needed
Gently fry the onions and garlic for a few mins, then add in everything else. If you need more liquid then just chuck in a bit more water.
Serve with spaghetti (or any pasta of your choosing) and demolish.

I’ve made this recipe twice now, really easy and tastes delicious. Thank you for sharing Poppy.x
They really look delicious, and I’d like to suggest just a little bit mint and thyme to meatballs.
