Afternoon Tea at Grosvenor House Park Lane, Mayfair

Finding an afternoon tea in London is not difficult. But finding one that’s just that bit more special, say, in a 5 star hotel which has been awarded ‘The Tea Guild Special Award of Excellence’, with the prettiest of pretty petit fours, a never-ending plethora of sandwiches and freshly baked scones with enough fresh jam and Devonshire clotted cream to make you weep with happiness… well that could be a bit harder….
Or maybe it’s not. The lovely folk at Buyagift.com got in touch, asking if I could spare the time to join them for a Champagne Afternoon Tea at 5 star Grosvenor House Hotel on Tuesday afternoon. It’s one of the newest experiences they’re offering and they (Christine and Ben) were popping along to experience it for themselves. I of course said yes. I am no fool.

We poured over the menu of teas and sipped our drinks while we made our decisions.. I chose Earl Grey, which I always find is the perfect accompaniment to tea and cake – I have it without milk and I find I can’t drink enough of it! While we waited for our tea to arrive we took in the beautiful surroundings of the very grand and beautiful room we were sat in.
The Park Room and Library have been open since 1929, delighting hotel guests and visitors with it’s grandeur, old fashioned charm and wonderful views of Hyde Park. There was a pianist playing gently in the background (all the old classics… including a left field rendition of ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’, which was actually very good) and although the room was busy, there was a low hum and a feeling of space and serenity…

And then the scones arrived…

We were also invited to have a slice of cake from their centre table, which was buckling under the weight of all the magnificent creations. It’s not often I turn down cake, but this was one of those times – the Grosvenor House afternoon tea is extremely generous in its servings and I was full to the brim.
London is such a magnificent city and afternoon tea is such a treat. To combine the two in surroundings such as The Grosvenor House is really quite magical, and if you are looking to treat someone to something just gorgeous, I say go here.
And I bet you won’t be able to eat all the sandwiches either.
