Poppy Loves Book Club Queen's Gambit, Elizabeth Fremantle
Yesterday’s hot Summer’s day concluded with a gorgeously warm July evening and my Book Club met in the beautiful courtyard at the back of Book and Kitchen, surrounded by bright flowers, fragrant herbs and the jibber jabber of the talkative birds…
We were there to talk about July’s book – Queen’s Gambit, by Elizabeth Fremantle and were all very excited, as the author herself was going to be joining us… (so we’d swotted up a bit too…)
Elizabeth was an absolute delight – so energetic, fun and passionate about her book, the period and of course, her leading lady – Katherine Parr. We learnt so much about Elizabeth Fremantle as a writer, her beloved characters and the realities of that extraordinary time.
We began Book Club with Elizabeth reading us an extract from her book – what a treat…

Thank you to all of you who participated online – especially Jane from Queenstown, NZ, who’d got up at the crack of dawn and was barely out of her pyjamas.. and Morgan, who lives in Notting Hill but was on a business trip in Germany! I so enjoyed trying to keep up with you all on my laptop!
The whole evening went by in a flash of wine, cake, delicious salads, book chatter and laughter.
I want to say a huge thank you to Elizabeth Fremantle for joining us at book club, for leaping in with such verve and charm.. and for dutifully signing all of our books. We just loved having you there and are looking forward to the next book, Sisters of Treason!
And another thank you to Muna, who owns, looks after and runs the glorious Book and Kitchen. You always look after us so wonderfully – we could not have found a more fitting home for our cosy book club.
