Word Up

I grew up with poetry. I spent many a childhood bedtime reading along with mum and I can still recite ‘The King’s Breakfast’ by A A Milne from start to finish. (Although she’s always done the voices better than me).
Poetry can pop up when you least expect it. I’ve been loving Poems on the Underground recently – spying the words between strangers’ heads and taking it all in…word by word.
This is one of my most favourite poems ever. It really struck a chord with me as I don’t tend to take the obvious path (friends are smacking their foreheads in despair at this very moment) so it was a special day when I found this gem sparkle back at me from the pages of an Oxfam bargain.
I’m sharing.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
