Ice Ice Baby
Yesterday I took my 9 yr old cousin out for a Day Of Fun. We went to the Cologne Christmas Market, we decorated Gingerbread at Hansel and Gretel’s Great Gingerbread Bake Off, we danced along the Embankment and ate Minstrels until we couldn’t see straight.
But the highlight of the day was Ice Skating at the Tower of London. I knew this was the highlight as my little cousin screamed (loudly) and jumped in the air with overwhelming excitement. I informed the concerned looking policeman that all was well and this is generally the affect the prospect of Ice Skating will have on a 9 year old girl.
If you have never been, go. If you have been Ice Skating, but not at the Tower of London – go. It is spectacular. The rink is situated in the dry-moat beneath the fortress of the tower on the banks of the River Thames. We had wooly hats, we had wooly gloves, we had snow, we had pretty twinkly fairy lights and we had Frank Sinatra crooning to us as we landed on our bottoms, (several times) as we hysterically laughed our way around the rink for a full hour.
We then settled ourselves into the cosy cafe with muffins and hot chocolate and smugly watched all the other people staggering around in circles, gripping onto the barriers for dear life and not being experts, like us.
So, I say it again – go. It’s big fun.
p.s. Get your skates on – the rink is there until 9th January 2011.
