Tabun Kitchen

If you haven’t got time to catch a plane to Israel, cheer with the rest of the passengers on your El Al flight as you land into Tel Aviv, board a bus to Jerusalem and seek out a cafe for lunch, don’t worry. Tabun Kitchen has arrived, here in Soho, serving up Jerusalem street food to knock your hummus lovin socks off.

Tabun Kitchen takes its name from the ‘Tabun’ oven – a centrepiece of Palestinian cooking since pre-Biblical times. These chaps are serving up their own modern version of this ancient style of cooking and cuisine. New twists and new ideas shine through the more traditional home cooking of the region… it’s the Tabun touch.

Red and I popped in for lunch mid-week and it was a perfect balance of snacky and totally fulfilling… and all utterly delicious. The food was comforting, full of Palestinian flavours and spices, and perfectly designed for sharing.

Think homemade labaneh, maftool cous cous salad, lamb makloubeh, fatet jaj chicken… I could go on. But I won’t.

Hanan Kattan, the founder of Tabun Kitchen, explains that what they serve up in the restaurant is authentic Jerusalem street food, which is not something I’ve come across before in London.

Hanan grew up in a Palestinian household, her mother’s family from Jersualem and her father’s from Bethlehem. She has now lived in London for three decades, and it’s been her long time wish to bring together her love of good food and middle-eastern culture… Ta da!

Tabun Kitchen was born…

We ate EVERYTHING and even though we were approaching full-to-the-brim status, we still ordered dessert – the whole meal was delicious.

Israel is now officially calling me, but in the meantime, Tabun Kitchen will be my destination whenever I feel the need for Palestinian food… and I’ll just have to imagine the weather ;)

  1. Literally no idea why I read this when I was hungry. Knew I shouldnt – did it anyways. Am now 20x hungrier – thanks!!

:) Great article and great pics, thank you!

  2. Although good review of a Palestinian restaurant, but why the constant references to “Israel”!

  3. Have you tried Ducksoup in Soho? You can read about their chef on the inploi blog here: bit.ly/2dWFj7l – Really interesting :) They do some really cool alternative dishes – with the menu changing most days
