There’s a saying in the world of theatre – ‘form over content’ – which essentially means that lots of effort has been put into making the lighting, the music and the costumes amazing… but the play itself is underwhelming. I’ve often thought of this phrase when faced with beautiful looking cakes in cafes and hotels, which sparkle and glow and look very fancy pants…. but when it comes to it, just don’t taste that great.
But THIS art-inspired afternoon tea, at Rosewood London, was absolutely, one hundred percent, not one of those occasions. On the contrary, it’s one of the best afternoon teas I’ve ever had.
Imagined up by the Mirror Room’s creative Head Pastry Chef, Mark Perkins, the afternoon tea is inspired by London’s beautiful, vibrant and unique art scene, and celebrates five iconic artists; Yayoi Kusama, Alexander Calder, Mark Rothko, Damien Hirst and Banksy.

Floor to ceiling mirrors
The Mirror Room itself is a stunning jewel box of a room, with floor-to-ceiling decorative mirrors, low lighting and cosy lounge style seating… my mum and I ensconced ourselves deep into the soft seats and marvelled at each and every delicacy…
Maldon smoked salmon, cream cheese and lemon | Le Madru Ham, Comté and wholegrain mustard | Coronation chicken, curry and sultanas | Avocado, tomatoes and basil | Egg mayonnaise and chives
Delicious scones… (Jam first. I won’t tell you again). Served with Cornish clotted cream, lemon curd and homemade strawberry jam
We began with a divine selection of sandwiches before moving onto freshly baked warm scones and amazing looking patisseries, with each one representing a different artist and story…
Inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama – milk chocolate mousse, passion fruit cremeux with chocolate set on chocolate sable biscuit
Banksy – Chocolate cube lled with vanilla cream choux, salted caramel, chocolate cremeux

Rosewood London already has very strong ties to the art scene – it’s the leading hotel partner of Frieze London, the world’s leading contemporary art fair and one of the few fairs to focus only on contemporary art and living artists. Damian Hirst – Cassis jelly, yuzu curd, white chocolate tart nished with Hirst dot decoration
Mark Rothko – Layered coconut sponge, raspberry, coconut mousse, decorated with raspberry chocolate
Alexander Calder – Pistachio bavarois, cherry jelly, pistachio sponge sprayed with red chocolate decorated as a calder mobil
The afternoon tea is now served on an easel, in line wth the art theme…
It was all absolutely exquisite, and if you are looking to treat yourself or someone special (beep beep it’s nearly Valentine’s!) then do pop the Rosewood and this amazing afternoon tea on the top of your list.
It’s very, very special.
