So the story goes that Owen Pacey moseyed out of Moorfields Eye Hospital after a wee incident involving a detached retina, spotted a derelict pub across the road and thought to himself – “I’ll have that.”
“Shoreditch was very different in 1995, and it was a pretty run-down area, a no-man’s land really. But when I came out, I noticed this derelict old pub. I’d been looking for new premises to really expand and it was perfect, space for my shop downstairs and a flat for me upstairs. The rest is history.” (The Angel Resident)
Owen, the owner of Renaissance London, has been sourcing, installing and producing premium original and reproduction fireplaces, unbelievable lighting, mirrors and architectural salvage for over 25 years. He has gathered a host of high profile projects and clients including One Hyde Park, Shoreditch House, Gilbert & George, Georgia May Jagger, Cher, Jamie Oliver, Naomi Campbell…shall I go on?
I was lucky enough to meet Owen last week and explore his showroom and warehouse, which is packed to the hilt with architectural salvage from Owen’s travels around the world…
We headed round the corner to his warehouse, just as Paul from Westland Coffee and Wine popped in for a bit of a sit down and a natter…
The warehouse is located next door to the showroom, in one of the only buildings left in Shoreditch where artists are still in residence. It was like walking into an Aladdin’s Cave of treasures… and I could not have felt more like I was in The Goonies, when they stumble across the pirate ship, filled to the brim with sparkling riches from around the world…
It’s packed with beautifully reproduced fireplaces, which sit amidst enormous and stunning lighting, chandeliers, statement mirrors and other pieces of architectural salvage.
And Owen REALLY knows his fireplaces….
It was such a pleasure to meet Owen and have a proper peek into his wonderful world… and if you’re in the market for a fireplace, or you just want to pop in to say hi to the guy who started off as a door stripper, just head on over.
Especially if you’ve got a date at Moorfields – you never know what can happen.
