An Art-Inspired Afternoon Tea
at Rosewood London

Afternoon-Tea-London-Rosewood-9

There’s a saying in the world of theatre – ‘form over content’ – which essentially means that lots of effort has been put into making the lighting, the music and the costumes amazing… but the play itself is underwhelming. I’ve often thought of this phrase when faced with beautiful looking cakes in cafes and hotels, which sparkle and glow and look very fancy pants…. but when it comes to it, just don’t taste that great.

But THIS art-inspired afternoon tea, at Rosewood London, was absolutely, one hundred percent, not one of those occasions. On the contrary, it’s one of the best afternoon teas I’ve ever had.

The Jungle Book Afternoon Tea

Jungle Book Afternoon Tea

Often when I go to a fancy dress party a lot of people don’t make a concerted effort. There might be a random wig, a bit of hairspray and maybe some tinted glasses… but then there is always that one person who embraces the theme and goes ALL OUT with amazing props and inspirational creativity that puts all the other revellers to shame… and that, dear reader, is exactly what the Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, London has gone and done with their Jungle Book themed afternoon tea.

A very floral afternoon tea

St James Hotel and Club

There’s something about old fashioned board games that I absolutely love. We used to have stacks of them as a child and we spent a lot of time as a family, moving little boots and hats around Monopoly boards, searching for Professor Plum and trying desperately to Get Home before anyone else managed it…

So, to combine this wonderful pastime and another of my absolute favourite things to do – indulge in an afternoon tea – is in my mind, pure genius. St. James’s Hotel & Club in St James’s has partnered with the UK’s leading toy store, Hamleys to create their Board Game Afternoon Tea – ‘It’s all in the Game‘.

Snow Queen Afternoon Tea at Conrad St James

Just before Christmas I was invited to Conrad St James Hotel for a sleepover (I love sleepovers – more on that very soon) and to try their new sparkling Wintery treat – the Snow Queen Afternoon Tea, served in the very glamorous Emmeline’s Lounge.

Think blackcurrant and cardamom snowflakes, sumptuous fruit and berries, mint macaroon snowstorms and the Snow Queen herself’s Magic Mirror, broken into icy blue sugar shards… It’s like stumbling into Narnia when someone’s forgotten to hide all the cakes. (Result!)

The Palm Court at The Langham is one of those places that makes you feel as though you have stepped back in time and straight into a land of real life Downton, My Fair Lady and magic.

Dating back to 1865, English Afternoon Tea is credited to the Duchess of Bedford. The legend says that the first lady to enjoy ‘afternoon tea’ was Anna Maria, the 7th Duchess of Bedford who lived at Woburn Abbey in Bedfordshire and was lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria.

I do love a pop up, but this pop up might just be the pinnacle of all pop ups. Pop up Mecca.

Champagne Laurent-Perrier have teamed up with luxury gastronomy company Cuisson to create an unforgettable afternoon tea experience at Piccadilly’s Burlington Arcade in association with Wedgwood. There is  so much about that sentence that I love… and I haven’t even mentioned the fact that the tea is created by Hideko Kawa – former Head Pastry Chef at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck….

(And if you’re looking for a worthy cause to donate to this Christmas, I know this little charity would be over the moon to receive a few pounds!)

He’s home for a couple of months now and to celebrate, I took him to Lanes of London by Hyde Park, for a very special and very festive afternoon tea….
