Babymooning (and Honeymooning!)
at The Scarlet Hotel, Cornwall

What can I say, it’s been a busy year and it’s only April.

We have very very very nearly finished the building work in our house, we got married in January and decided to throw growing a new human into the mix, to keep us on our toes.

For the rest of our lives.

Last month, we realised that we were fast approaching the era when extended time alone – just the two of us – would change forever. We also hadn’t managed to get away properly to celebrate our nuptials (although we did have a mini one day London honeymoon the following day, involving salt beef bagels on Brick Lane) so we decided to treat ourselves and take ourselves away for a Babymoon AND Honeymoon at the glorious Scarlet Hotel in Cornwall.

We hopped on the train at Paddington and picked up a hire car at Bodmin Parkway station, from www.cornwallcarhire.co.uk. They were there to meet us, handed us the keys to our snazzy sparkly car, and off we zoomed…

Our carriage awaits…

The Scarlet is a luxury eco hotel and spa, just for grown ups, on the edge of the ocean in Mawgan Porth. And it is unlike any other hotel I have ever been to, or ever likely to go to in the future.

As soon as we arrived, we were taken care of and looked after in the most lovely way. Sometimes I find that you can feel when people are bending over backwards to accommodate you, or perhaps in some countries staff are angling for tips… but at The Scarlet, it was as if you were being welcomed into someone’s home and all they wanted was for you to feel as calm and relaxed as possible.

Our suitcases were whisked away to our room, we were brought tea and biscuits (win!) and a member of The Scarlet team took us through our itinerary. I’d been booked onto their amazing Pregnancy Journey, which included a massage, a facial, a full body scrub, a guided meditation amongst other wonderful things…  we also had a clifftop hot tub booked (they lowered the temperature so it was suitable for pregnancy), and I had a one-to-one pregnancy yoga session to look forward to.

Aside from all of these amazing elements, we still had hours of spa relaxation to look forward to in their Ayurvedic inspired spa, and we couldn’t wait to shimmy into our ropes and slippers and delve into our books and podcasts in the relaxation room.

With that in mind, we were shown to our room to properly begin our mooning… and it was absolutely spectacular.

Our bed, our view, our happy place…

Our bed was so exceptionally comfortable, I had to take a peek at what mattress I was sleeping on. Or course it was Naturalmat – the gurus of natural, organic sleep.

We robed up and headed down to the relaxation room, where we stayed for a little while, feeling the warmth seep into our bones and turn off our brains….

We headed down for an early supper in their fabulous restaurant – the food and wine flight was excellent (LM reported on the wine – I was water all the way) and thus began our pattern of going to bed looking forward to breakfast and waking up looking forward to dinner… everything was absolutely delicious.

This was possibly the most decadent dessert I’ve ever devoured.

The following day we wrapped up in our cosies and headed out for a stroll on the beach… It was so cold, but the sun was blazing, the sea was blue, the dogs were ecstatic and I couldn’t help but feel a swell of pride towards England. The Cornish landscape is really something spectacular. It’s dramatic, beautiful and completely takes my breath away…

We could feel the temperature dropping, even though the sun was shining… so we headed back in for some lunch before our clifftop hot tub… and by the time we were walking down to our tub, the snow had started to fall…

The snow was extraordinary. I’ve never in my life seen snow settle by the sea and the result was utterly magical. We holed up inside, ate delicious food, drank tea and did absolutely nothing, apart from sleep, listen to music and read.

“We designed the Scarlet so that almost wherever you are, you can enjoy far-reaching views of the beach and sea beyond. We want you to feel connected to our unique location, both indoors and out. The hotel is a balance of light, airy spaces with cosy, private areas which allow you to mix with our other guests or enjoy peace and solitude.

Importantly, we are a hotel for grown ups. The Scarlet offers you serenity, a chance to escape from life’s fast pace, slow down and truly enjoy nature, great food and a warm welcome.”

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for my Pregnancy Journey to begin, so while the snow fell outside, I padded down to the spa, where I was looked after and pampered for 4 whole hours. It was completely heavenly and every treatment was tailored to pregnancy and my ever increasing size ;) I could lie on my side during the massage and even during the facial I was able to have my back raised more than I thought I would.

Every element of the journey was so thoughtful and considered – I felt completely safe in their hands and can’t recommend the experience enough.

Later in the day I had my one-to-one yoga session with a delightful teacher who was so, so helpful in teaching me some useful stretches and positions ideal for pregnancy and labour… and it was the perfect end to my journey. Afterwards, I floated back to LM on my zen cloud and demolished a bowl of fresh berries and fruit.

We had supper in our room (at no additional cost – it’s the little things) and woke up fresh as daisies the following day, ready for another delicious brekky…

Toast and butter. There is nothing better. (Unless you add honey. Or marmite.)

…and then I spent our final day swimming and relaxing, while LM made full use of the steam room and cliff top sauna…

We had the most gorgeous time and left (rather reluctantly) the following day, feeling relaxed, recharged and excited for our new adventure ahead…

I’m now due in around 7 weeks and I’ve been practising those yoga moves! Spending this time at The Scarlet was absolutely invaluable for us. Just taking time to stop and breathe somewhere natural and stunning amidst house renovations and buggy research was so, so important.

We loved every minute… and now it’s onwards.

We’re charging towards a deadline we can’t possibly prepare for…

And we can’t wait.
