Treat yourself. Everyday.
(It’s more important than you think)

I don’t know about you, but I find that I can get to the end of the week and have no idea where it went, or how I got there. I will have had meetings in town, events in far away places, trains to jump on, buses to jump off, blog posts to write and photos to edit… and that’s before doing laundry, shopping for food, shaving my legs… and somehow, even though I don’t know exactly how, it all got done.

The reason that I think I’m able to fly through several weeks like this is because I am pretty good at looking after myself. I don’t mean slapping moisturiser on my face or eating green vegetables. But more really looking after myself, like you would a dear pal.

You’d let them lie in. You’d let them eat cake for breakfast. And you’d let them pause if they needed to.

You don’t have to have an enormous milestone moment (buying your first property, taking a trip of a lifetime etc) to treat yourself. In fact, it’s the little everyday perks and treats that add sparkle and fairy dust to our lives.

I’m not the only one who believes this. No siree – in fact, lots of us enjoy “everyday treats”. New research from American Express** has revealed that Brits treat themselves to a little treat, on average 3 times a week, with one in six (17%) doing so at least once a day.

According to the research, Brits top treat is ordering a takeaway (30%) followed by reading a book (27%)

The top 10 treats in full are:

– Ordering a takeaway (30%)
– Reading a book (27%)
– Going out for dinner (26%)
– Watching a favourite film or TV show (23%)
– Having a lie in (22%)
– Going to the pub or bar (19%)
– Eating ice cream (18%)
– Having a bath (16%)
– Buying a new item of clothing or pair of shoes (16%)
– Going to the cinema (14%)

Treating ourselves daily is something I’m in full support of and I’ve teamed up with American Express to share with you some of my favourite ways to do this. Your homework is then to go forth and treat yourself, as life is too fast and you are too special.

Here are my top three weekly treats:

This may sound far from rocket science to you, but trust me, it’s one step away from full meditation and leaves me feeling off-the-scale-relaxed, especially when I’ve set aside time to do it. It’s in my diary! “Read Book”. (It’s highlighted).

My phone goes off (and all the beeps that go with it), my feet go up and I am lost in another world. My world can wait. I’m imaginationing.

This clearly needs no explanation. But let me just say that taking time to run the perfect bath is as much of the treat as the bath itself.

I brew the perfect tea, I select my favourite podcast (often The Archers, followed by Freakonomics – what does this say about me?) and my bath is as luxurious as I can make it. Creamy bubbles, the perfect temperature and a candle is pretty much compulsory.

An evening bath before you hit the hay, has got to be one of life’s best and cheapest luxuries. I’m a fan.

Don’t ever underestimate the power of the takeaway. Food is delivered to your very door whenever you desire… and there is NO WASHING UP.

I don’t feel bad ordering out. I would if I did it loads, but I don’t. So it really is a treat. And I value this treat extremely highly.

Takeaway has been a treat for as long as I can remember – we hardly did it when I was a child, so when we did it was a BIG deal. Very exciting and VERY thrilling. Honesty, those childhood feelings have never really left me and I still fizz a little with excitement at the anticipation of my favourite meal arriving… and that is duck and pancakes. With all the cucumber and spring onion sliced up bits. And that NAUGHTY plum sauce. *Sigh*

  1. I completely agree – little treats like these are SO important! We just had a lovely Indian take away yesterday and I don’t regret it one bit – it was so lovely and relaxing xx

  2. Self-love and time out is so important. My new ritual for tricky days, is a hot bath complete with Lush bath bomb, a cup of camomile tea and some soft jazz tunes. Perfection!

  3. Couldn’t agree more with you on this – taking time out to focus on you really needs to be considered more. Pressure and stresses from everyday life can really take it’s toll!
