Way back when in 1991 (that still only feels like yesterday to me) husband and wife team Craig Sams and Jo Fairley knocked their clever little heads together in their Portobello flat and dreamt up a whole new delicious dark chocolate brand… and the results of this head knocking was the brilliant Green & Black’s. Well done them.
Their first chocolate bar was a high quality dark chocolate, with 70% cocoa solids – loved instantly and you know as I do that this chocolate bar has become a bit of an institution in its own right.
Roll on 26 years (26 years!) and Green & Black’s has launched their brand new range – the Velvet Edition. It’s still 70% dark chocolate, still ethically sourced the cocoa beans have carefully been selected by the clever taste specialists to ensure that it appeals to those who have always found the taste of dark chocolate a bit too rich or complex. They’ve blended delicate Ghanaian cocoa beans with the finest ingredients from around the world, resulting in the the new chocolate collection being rich in cocoa yet exceptionally smooth in flavour.
It’s a kind of cross-over dark chocolate. A transitional step, if you will. If you’re loyal to milk chocolate and you’ve been afraid of dipping your toes into the darker chocolatey pools… this is the range for you.
Last week I attended the launch event in Soho, named wonderfully, ‘Dark Tales Retold’. It was a magical woodland labyrinth of twists and turns and sensory experiences, bringing the new range to life… Each themed room had a corresponding flavour – such a clever and unique way to launch a chocolate range and I loved it.
The new Velvet Edition range:
70% Cocoa – the rich taste of Velvet Edition chocolate, exceptionally smooth in flavour
Roasted Almond – Velvet Edition chocolate with the highest quality Mediterranean almonds, roasted with their skins on for an even more delicious flavour
Raspberry & Hazelnut – Velvet Edition chocolate with pieces of raspberry and chopped hazelnuts. The zingy raspberries cut through the delicate chocolate and perfectly complement the sweet taste of roasted hazelnuts
Salted Caramel – Velvet Edition chocolate with pieces of Yorkshire Caramel infused with flakes of Anglesey Sea Salt, culminating in a delicate crunch and a truly moreish taste
Sea Salt – Velvet Edition chocolate with delicate flakes of Anglesey Sea Salt. As each flake hits the tongue, it offers a delicious contrast to the sweet chocolate
Orange & Almond – Velvet Edition chocolate with mouth-watering Sicilian blood orange oil and sweet chopped almonds
Mint – Velvet Edition chocolate with Indian Peppermint oil, delivering a refreshing mint flavour which complements the sweet chocolate
And if you haven’t caught their new (and first ever!) advert on the tellybox – here it is.
So if you’re wondering what you can pop in your chocolate lover’s Christmas stocking this year, well, you can thank me later.
p.s. Green & Black’s Velvet Edition range includes some beautiful gifting boxes, too! Crimbo’s coming!
