Summer’s Coming…

Maple & Kings

There was a moment today, where I felt warm. Outside. There was a proper shift in the weather and I felt the sun on my face for more than just a couple of accidental minutes.

There was still a considerable breeze and it definitely wasn’t warm in the shade, but the fact remains that the sun said a proper hello and it looks as though it’s not going away any time soon. Hip pip.

I took full advantage of this weather and headed to Kings Cross to meet my pal Caroline, to catch up on life, work (she’s a sensational illustrator) and everything in between.

We ducked into newly opened Maple & Kings, for fresh salads and smoothies and devoured them on the grass in St Pancras Square, right in front of the cafe. My first picnic of the year :)

Maple & Kings has an amazing selection of healthy and delicious dishes – think gluten-free rhubarb pomegranate oat pancakes with coconut yoghurt and maple vegan butter (yes, that’s one thing) and poached eggs and beetroot smoked salmon with cauliflower hotcake and charred kale… yep, that’s one thing too.

That’s Caroline, being bamboozled by the delicious smoothie menu…

The view from their front door…

The cafe is the second venue from Adria Wu who launched her first site, Maple & Fitz, in Fitzrovia in 2015. This new, bigger store serves up yummy breakfasts and lunch on weekdays, which are all designed to nourish you from within. And I’m all for nourishment, on any and every level.

We both chose large salad boxes, which were £6.99 each. They were ENORMOUS and neither of us finished our lunches! The portions were very generous and the salads themselves were outstanding. Amazingly fresh, wonderful flavours and with every mouthful I felt my body whisper “thank you”.

Caroline and I have known each other for years, and so have been in and seen each other’s chapters. She’s seen me go from full time fashion buyer to full time blogger (with some interesting detours along the way…) and I’ve watched her grow into one of the most incredible illustrators I’ve ever come across. She’d just roll her eyes at me if i told her that, so I’m telling you instead. (Take a look at her instagram and you’ll see what I mean).

It was such a treat to sit and eat our lunch in the sunshine. Summer is definitely knocking at the window now, and I for one am flinging it wide open.

Come on in!

  1. I love how so many cool places have recently been opening up in Kings Cross – there’s so many new spots there that I’m still yet to try! I love the look of your food here, so I’m definitely this place on the top of my list. I’d preferably like to enjoy mine with this glorious sunshine too please..! x
