One of my very first blog posts was all about crumpets. Crumpets and tea, crumpets with jam, crumpets on the sofa, crumpets oozing with butter…
Crumpets sum up cosy for me and I’ve been banging on about them ever since. They are a part of me. Literally. I’m probably around 40% crumpets on any given day. (Apart from Christmas, when I became 70% cheese. There was less room for crumpets).
I love crumpets. I love what they represent (calm, open fires, cosy socks, friends) and I love that they have been around for gazillions of years. (Well, since 1382 – those Anglo Saxons knew a thing or two.
I bring with me today good crumpet tidings, for the Warburton Crumpet Elves at Newburn Bakehouse by Warburtons have come up with a whole new crumpet. A WHOLE NEW CRUMPET.
It’s gluten free! Not only is it gluten free, but it’s also wheat and milk free too. So for anyone who hasn’t been able to eat crumpets before, due to those ingredients, the world has just become a far merrier place.
I have a few go-to toppings, when it comes to dressing my crumpets for tea, and these include plain butter, butter and honey, and I do love cheese and jam…
But one of my new favourites is a crumpet I like to call Holy Smokes (Batman). Smoked salmon, lemon, pepper and a dollop of crème fraiche.
To me, this is combining the refined and traditional element of afternoon tea, with the rustic, no nonsense and comforting bite of crumpets.
Toast your crumpets up either in a toaster or under a grill, and as soon as they are ready, spread generously with butter. (The ooze factor should never be underplayed).
Then, layer on fresh smoked salmon, grind on some black pepper, squeeze with lemon and finish with a generous dollop of crème fraiche and a sprinkle of fresh chives.
Then find the most comfortable spot in your home, put your slippers on and eat, preferably while watching some kind of old movie with Clark Gable.
You can thank me (and Newburn Bakehouse by Warburtons) later.
P.S. If you’ve got a topping you want to share with the world, pop it up on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #CrumpetChallenge – I will keep my eyes peeled. Bring on the Crumpetition.
