Silk-Screening in Clerkenwell
with Daniel Heath

Airbnb-Experiences-Poppy-Loves-2

I’ve stayed in a few Airbnb places over the years, and each time I have loved the sense of having my own little home in a new part of the world. More recently, Airbnb have taken it upon themselves to enrich their customer’s lives even further, by offering different Airbnb experiences, hosted by locals, which you can book directly through the app…

So if you’re flying off to LA, you could camp under the stars, enjoy a fireside meal, and get surfing lessons from local Adventure Man, Quinn… or you could book yourself onto a guided music tour in Cuba, with one of Havana’s award winning singers…

I arrived and entered the workshop via this gorgeous forest, complete with very realistic sound effects ;)

There are experiences and adventures in everything you could imagine, from Sushi lessons, to landscape gardening and bookshop tours… there is something for everyone and I LOVE IT.

Here in London there are thousands of clever folk, who are experts in one thing or another, and many of them are hosting experiences on the Airbnb website. Yesterday I got a taster of a silk screen printing workshop, run by East London artisan, Daniel Heath.

I already knew a bit about Daniel, as I was given the beautiful Makers of East London book for Christmas, in which Daniel features, alongside many other wonderfully talented makers. He started out in Walthamstow, which immediately piqued my interest, having moved there last Summer.

The workshop I attended was in Clerkenwell at the Airbnb pop-up ‘Outside In’ house with Pantone, however Daniel usually runs his Wallpaper Printing Masterclass out of his converted Victorian factory space in Hackney Wick.

‘Outside In’ is a collaboration between Airbnb and Pantone which has transformed a home in London into an indoor-outdoor oasis of “Greenery”, to bring Pantone’s 2017 Colour of the Year to life. And it WORKS.

I arrived full of cold and sneezing (I’m a total delight at the moment) and was immediately handed a green Mother Juice and some cake. My kind of medicine.

We sat down and Daniel explained the process and how to take inspiration from the beautiful greenery around us. Leaves, succulents, flowers and ivy… all perfect fodder to help unleash those creative juices…

We were printing onto wood as this was just a taster of the (normally 4 hours) workshop he runs, where you have the opportunity to design and make your own wallpaper…

I am very tempted to book this in once our floors are done! (We’re currently camping on a mattress downstairs while our floorboards get restored – I’ll post some pictures of the before and after so you can see!)

I loved this workshop, and the really good news is that you don’t have to book a property through airbnb in order to book an experience – anyone can book a workshop/walk/talk anywhere in the world…

And who knows – there might be something right up your street, just down the road…
