Brunching on Baker Street

I find that things get sorted out over brunch. Problems are solved, difficulties are unpicked and the world is put to rights. It’s my favourite meal hands down. Apart from cake and tea. And yes, that’s a meal.

Brunch is made even better when you can share it with a bestie, and that is exactly what I did last week, at Bill’s on Baker Street.

Bill’s is one of those places that sort of feels like home, even though there are tables of strangers there and friendly people serving you bacon… it still manages to feel as though you’re sitting at your kitchen table, sharing a pot of tea, having a natter.

It’s bright, light and happy. There’s no other word to describe it – it’s a joyful cafe, with smiley waiting staff and as much avocado as you can eat. It’s possibly the only place I have ever been defeated on the avocado front. Bill’s out-avocadoed me.

We talked about life… good stuff, bad stuff… challenges we’re facing, things we’ve overcome, and we recalled hilarious anecdotes from our teenage years. Which resulted in tea coming out of my nose a little bit. But that’s another story. (And also – I don’t recommend it. It hurt).

Friends who know you now who knew you back then are the most precious ones, I find. They know when you’re happy, they know when you’re sad and they know when you’re really not ok even when you say that actually, you are. And, wonderfully, they also know when not to challenge you on that… even if they know the truth.

Friends who know you like that are the ones to hold on tightest too.

And whom you should always take, whenever you can, to brunch.

  1. I used to quite like Bill’s, but my friend works there and sadly they’re moving towards microwave packaged food, which is a shame.

I LOVE Fireworks night. I love the trudging through parks and fields, the smell of nearly burnt jacket potatoes smothered...
