Ever wondered where London’s designers, fashionistas, Dj’s, music producers and art scene get their haircut? Well, wonder no more.
New to Bethnal Green after relocating from Soho based in the ‘Lucy in Disguise’ shop , the Drama Parlour is one of London’s best kept and coolest secrets, and I recently got to have my locks chopped by the brains (and beauty) behind the drama – Victoria Saunders.
Victoria has been mistress of the coiffure for over 20 years and is the darling of London’s coolest designers, DJs, creatives and musicians. From setting up award winning London Salons to a spell as an international hair educator, Victoria regularly styles film, video and magazine shoots, works fashion shows and collaborates with fashion designers, musicians and entertainers. She is also partner in a festival and special event promotions called ‘Sort Yourself Out Love’.. which I think might be the best name I’ve ever heard for anything. Ever.
Victoria set up shop with Jeff Ginsburg who has rightly earned the reputation as one of the hair industry’s grand dames, having worked at the highest levels for companies such as Toni & Guy, L’Oreal and Kevin Murphy… he’s worked with all the glossies and has also collaborated with the likes of Vivienne Westwood and Tommy Hilfiger …
The Drama Parlour is their baby and sits above The Dundee Arms pub in Bethnal Green – it’s so cool, I wasn’t sure if I was cool enough to be there. I’m not that cool, but I wore my cool boots so I figured that on the cool-ometer I’d be fine.
Tucked up a flight of stairs at the back of the pub, it felt very much like a secret hideaway – you really would have no idea it was there unless someone told you and it feels very much like one of the old traditional Parisian salons…
“I wanted to open the ultimate neighbourbood salon with Drama Parlour. A hang out, where the music is guaranteed to put a smile on your face, the team is exceptional, and the atmosphere intimate and friendly. A good salon gives you a good haircut, but a great salon is one of your best friends – the friend you can pop into, have a cup of tea, or something stronger, and leave feeling like the best version of yourself.” – Victoria Saunders
Using all-natural Kevin Murphy products, Victoria gave me a perfect blow-dry, leaving my hair wavy, glossy and smelling gorgeous.
Her attention to detail is impressive, and its important to her that everyone who works at the Drama Parlour is as passionate about hair and style as she is… so it’s no wonder that Colourist Kim Martin is the newest addition to the team – formerly the International Creative Director for Colour at Toni&Guy, Kim is responsible for changing the face of hair colouring, putting the technique into colour and becoming the ‘go to’ colourist for most model agencies in London…
Bethnal Green is already on the up and this addition is catapulting it even faster into the cool London spotlight.
It was the perfect place to get preened before heading over the road to The Typing Room, where I was having dinner with LM… (more on that very soon).
I’ll definitely be going back to the Drama Parlour – my tresses won’t have it any other way now.
