Red Velvet Cake at Drink, Shop & Do

Tea and cake are two of my utmost favourite things. They are up there, on my ‘what makes me really happy’ list, along with bubblebaths, marmite, mugs, Sunday mornings and winning at Connect 4. So you won’t be surprised to know that I know some tea and cake haunts in my city, that are SO GOOD, you’ll want to woot and toot and do handstands. Even if you can’t.

(Do I need a disclaimer here? *If you do a handstand after going to Drink, Shop & Do and hurt yourself I am not to be held responsible. But I will come and play Backgammon with you in hospital.)

Hélène Darroze at the Connaught

Caviar at the Connaught by Hélène Darroze

Back in 2008 (how can that be 7 years ago already?) the ever so clever chef Hélène Darroze waked into the kitchens at the Connaught and began to create a different kind of magic. In just three years she already had two Michelin stars under her belt and her delicious dishes are still being served up at the Connaught to its lucky guests and other London food lovers daily.

Last week I was invited to join a select gaggle of foodies at The Sommelier’s Table for a ‘Secret Supperclub’ at the Connaught for a seven course (SEVEN COURSE)  tasting menu, complete with blind matching wines.

Vivienne Westwood 150th anniversary edition of Alice in Wonderland

Can you believe that Alice in Wonderland is celebrating its 150th birthday? That’s a very old white rabbit, right there.

Theo's Pink Fizz - Theo Fennell's new cocktail for Sketch

Last week I was lucky enough to be one of the first in line to try a brand new cocktail  at sketch. Lucky little me.

Sketch has joined forces with Theo Fennell – THAT British jewellery designer – and together they have knocked up one very special cocktail, named very aptly ‘Theo’s Pink Fizz’, as pink is a very important colour for both collaborators. This cocktail will be launched at sketch at the beginning of June this year to celebrate the beginning of Summer. Hip pip!

Afternoon Tea at Bea's of Bloomsbury

I’d been dying to go to Bea’s of Bloomsbury for ages – ever since my pal Louise suggested we went there and we couldn’t get a table – it was THAT popular.  So it seemed fitting that when I managed to secure a table for afternoon tea at their St Paul’s branch a couple of weeks ago, Louise was my cake date.

Hotel de la Trémoille

We’re gonna need a bigger bed…

I became familiar with the song ‘April in Paris’ some years ago, when I bought an old recording of Sarah Vaughan singing it… I listened to it non-stop for the entire duration of Spring that year.

The song conjures up such wonderful feelings and images…

“April in Paris,
Chestnuts in blossom,
Holiday tables under the trees…..”

You may also have already heard how ridiculously delicious everything is… and that they have recently added some heart stopping show pieces to their already bulging menu…? No? My amazing make up lesson
with Lina Cameron

Lina Cameron Make Up Artist

“As little girls, we know we are beautiful. We just feel it.
Mirrors are places where we smile and twirl and sparkle.

But somewhere along the way, that smile becomes a little frown and a critical eye.
We turn to make-up and we conceal, we mask, we distract. As if beauty is only an illusion. A bag of tricks. Something we conjure, not something we feel.

My name is Lina. I’m a makeup artist.
I see your beautiful self and I’ll show you make-up that simply reveals it.”

Blow dry & Updo bar in Chelsea

Duck & Dry, Kings Road, Chelsea

Duck & Dry is the brain child of Yulia Rorstrom who, frustrated by the lack of accessible yet exciting everyday hair styling solutions in London, decided to go all out and create one herself.  Very sensible.

Duck & Dry is a blow dry bar with a difference.  Actually, with several differences. Prosecco, being one of them.

Renaissance London:
Stunning Architectural Salvage
in Shoreditch

Renaissance London, Shoreditch

So the story goes that Owen Pacey moseyed out of Moorfields Eye Hospital after a wee incident involving a detached retina, spotted a derelict pub across the road and thought to himself – “I’ll have that.”

“Shoreditch was very different in 1995, and it was a pretty run-down area, a no-man’s land really. But when I came out, I noticed this derelict old pub. I’d been looking for new premises to really expand and it was perfect, space for my shop downstairs and a flat for me upstairs. The rest is history.” (The Angel Resident)
