Dining in style at One Kensington

One Kensington

One Kensington, which has only recently opened (March 24th, 2014) is situated in one of the most enviable spots of London – just opposite the beautiful Kensington Palace Gardens… so, a rubbish view then.

It is the latest addition in the Tamarind Collection restaurant group, which already boasts the Tamarind of Mayfair, Imli Street in Soho and Tamarind London, based out in sunny California. (I can’t say that word without hearing Joni Mitchell in my ears…love that song.)

For this, their fourth restaurant, they have cleverly managed to nab one of the hottest chefs about town, Massimiliano Blasone. This clever Michelin Star waving chap was previously the chef at the Malibu beachfront hotel, ‘Nikita‘ and before that, at Apsleys at The Lanesborough.

So, I knew we were in for a treat…

The raised champagne table next to the wall safe ‘the John Tann table’ pays homage to the sophisticated engineering

First things first. I propped myself up at the impressive long bar, while I waited for Lovely Man to get there. I poured over the extensive cocktail menu and eventually landed upon the Russian Spring Punch; Absolut Elyx, crème de cassis, fresh raspberries, lemon juice cane syrup and topped with Champagne. Hokay!

I nibbled delicious olives, while  I watched the master at work – bottles were moving about incredibly quickly, but with charm,  an ease and an elegance. And a big smile too.

Of course I Instagrammed it. What do you take me for? Follow me here…

One Kensington is extremely glamourous.. yet extremely relaxed. It has a sense of luxurious ease about it, and a calmness, which makes you feel that you are somewhere very special indeed…

The restaurant is housed in a grade II listed building at number One Kensington High Street. The building was originally home to The London & County Bank in 1885 and there are clever design nods to this throughout the restaurant.

Many of the original features remain and have been lovingly restored, such as the rich wood panelled walls… and if you look carefully, you may even be able to find the old wall safe that still exists, made by the Tann family, who are renowned as the best safe builders of that time. It is big and locked and very old looking. Very exciting. Very Goonies.

Lovely Man arrived and we were whisked over to our table as quick as a flash. No dilly dallying here. Nope. We were hungry.

The food was exquisite. Which is unsurprising, given who created it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Michelin Star was shooting through the sky in One Kensington’s direction at this very moment…

One Kensington, in its own words ‘combines seriousness about cuisine and design with a sense of adventure. It is luxurious playground for Londoners and tourists alike to enjoy the history, diversity and cosmopolitan nature of undoubtedly one of the best cities in the world.’

And if you weren’t already sold, here are the desserts. It’s a wonder I ever left. I could live there. I think I might. No one would notice me. I’m only little.

(Although, I was littler prior to this trio of amazingness…)

Dining at One Kensington really is a very wonderful experience. I, as you know, am not in any way a qualified food critic.. but I do know something special when I see it.

And this is it.

Something special.

Book Description

Charlie is a freshman. And while he’s not the biggest geek in the school, he is by no means popular. Shy, introspective, intelligent beyond his years yet socially awkward, he is a wallflower, caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it. Charlie is attempting to navigate his way through uncharted territory: the world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends; the world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite. But Charlie can’t stay on the sideline forever. Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a deeply affecting coming-of-age story that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller-coaster days known as growing up.

Liane Carroll Trio with John Etheridge

Pizza Express

Pizza? Jazz? Pizza and jazz? Yes. Pizza and jazz. There is no better combo since jelly and ice cream. Cheese and pineapple. Um. Peanut butter and tomato! (Just me?)

If you have never been to this legendary basement jazz club, then it’s time you went. Jazz lovers have been flocking to this 120-capacity club in the heart of Soho for years, to hear and see some of the best jazz players in the world.

Pizza Express

John Etheridge at Pizza Express Jazz Club

Top jazz players have been playing the club for years and more recently, more mainstream musicians like Norah Jones, Jamie Cullum, Diana Krall and Amy Winehouse all sharpened their chops here.. Also, as an audience member you really couldn’t get much more up close and personal. (Which reminds me, don’t have the chilli sauce on your pizza if you can’t hack it, or you’ll be sneezing olives into the piano. This definitely did not happen to me.)

Last Friday night I was lucky enough to catch the fantastic Liane Carroll Trio with guest guitarist-amazers, John Etheridge. John, whose career has taken him from a long-term collaboration with legendary violinist Staphane Grapelli to being a key member of seminal jazz-fusion band ‘Soft Machine,’ has a way of being completely yet understatedly brilliant.  It’s rather unnerving, how you suddenly realise that your jaw has dropped open in awe… and you have a bit of rocket in your teeth. (Again, this definitely did not happen to me.) Pat Metheney has named him as ‘one of the best guitarists in the world’ so I feel entirely justified in being utterly bowled over.

Liane is dynamite on stage. Funny, self deprecating, hilarious, silly and wonderful. She is a hugely skilled and inventive singer and pianist, who manages to redefine the boundaries between jazz, pop and blues… She was joined on stage by Roger Carey on bass and Mark Fletcher on drums. Oof, they were good. I’m glad I can now do dirty whistles with my fingers – I was making a happy racket.  Her heart melting and emotional version of ‘The Nearness of You’ was my highlight.. and I still managed to whistle, even though I was sobbing into my Fiorentina pizza…

I love this jazz club. It makes me feel excited and alive and lucky to be in London. It’s moody, it’s intimate and it’s the real deal. It’s steeped in jazz history and its walls are packed to the hilt with pictures of faces gone by to prove it…

It’s a total gem of a venue and with jazz music pulsing through it seven nights a week, there will always be a gig on the horizon for you to catch.

See you there,

Fleabag 1

I haven’t laughed so much and so continuously (for a whole hour) for a very long time. In fact, I’m not sure it’s ever happened. My tummy hurt the next day. I have new stomach muscles now, thanks to the very, very clever Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Who is really annoyingly talented. I’d hate her if she hadn’t made me laugh so much and given me, what looks like to be the beginnings of a six-pack. (It’s nearly a one-pack, but you have to start somewhere.)

Fleabag Fleabag Fleabag Fleabag

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is not only a very talented actress, but is also a rather spectacular playwright.  Fleabag is written and performed by the lady herself and it is now one of the most talked about plays by Soho Theatre Associate Company, DryWrite. Not bad for a debut.

This one-hour-one-woman show wowed audiences and had sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Festival last year, where it picked up a Fringe First award… and so now finds itself housed and perfectly located at the Soho Theatre.

Courtesy of Richard Davenport

Courtesy of Richard Davenport

This bitter-sweet and daring show lets us into the confused and complex mind of a girl in her late twenties. She’s angry, pervy, (very) confrontational, (very very) cruel, forgetful, unforgiving, flippant, capricious, but undeniably honest.

For one hour only, Fleabag lets us see the world, with all its nitty gritty, through her eyes as we follow her life, love, loss and heartbreak. Oh, and there’s a guinea pig themed cafe too. So there’s something for everyone.

fleabag

Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag

Fleabag is directed by Vicky Jones, whose critically-acclaimed play The One was winner of the 2013 Verity Bargate Award for best new play.

It’s brave, it’s rude, (oh so rude) it’s dark, uncomfortable, really naughty in places and completely, utterly and tummy achingly hilarious.

It’s only on until the 25th May, so please go and (flea)bag yourself a ticket and brace yourself – it’s a bit of a ride, is Fleabag.

The Drawing Room

Wiggling through the ancient wiggly streets that lie between Spitalfields market and the City of London, I knew I was looking for a charming and quirky Georgian townhouse, dating from 1750 (that’s a long time ago) which is where the new (and stunning) Drawing Room Salon now lives… and then I found it.. and it had me at hello. Or, perhaps, this little fellow did…

As soon as I walked in I knew I loved it – it feels as though you are in someone’s home. Someone’s really AMAZING home. There are the magazines I want to read, the comfy sofas I want to lounge on, beautiful pieces of shiny wooden furniture (instead of the cold and sterile benches you might expect).. and a cocktail bar in the corner. Obvs.

The whole salon has been a real labour of love for partners James and Oskar, and they have done an amazing job. Every detail, tile, tap and and trinket has been carefully found and placed in its perfect spot.

And then it was time for me to have my hair washed and cut. Oskar Pera, who is I’m certain, the friendliest and kindest man in all of East London, is a hair wizard. But he doesn’t have a wizard’s hat. (As far as I know…)

He trained in Seville and began his sparkling and ever progressing career in Palma De Mallorca, serving Europe’s higher than high society. He saw the light in 2006 and moved to London, where he worked in many of the top Shoreditch salons. He soon began working independently for fashion labels, magazines, models and artists.. and the rest, as they say, is history.

Oskar has styled for a huge number of exceptional brands, including (if you don’t like name dropping, then please avert your eyes, for I am about to drop so many names you’ll think me extremely careless)  Dior, Vivienne Westwood, Kenzo, Chloé, Erdem, Fred Perry, Lacoste, JW Andersen, and Peter Pilotto.

He has also delivered creative editorial work for magazines such as Vogue, GQ, Ponystep, Volt and Dansk. Models, musicians and artists served include Florence Welch, Cara Delevigne, George Michael, Sharleen Spiteri, The Alpines, Trudie Styler, and Kate Nash… and Poppy. (Me.) I’m certain I am the highlight of his career to date.

Oskar and James were so sweet and lovely, my hair looked completely amazing and the whole experience was the perfect balance of urban, artisan and luxury.

Some good news? You’ll get 30% off your first haircut if you mention Poppy Loves! So there you go – name dropping isn’t so bad after all…
