Ain’t no sunshine..

Just when you thought it was safe to don a bikini, throw on a skimpy thingy and skip merrily in your flip flops through the park down to the lido… there is a sharp reminder that you live in ENGLAND.. and thunder, lightning and rain hooning it down so hard that you get a soggy bra, is all part of the deal.

It’s been proper brrrr weather today.. I will even go so far as to use the word, ‘chilly’. My flip flops have been cast to the back of my cupboard, the hot cocoa is out, I’m listening to Frank croon about his chestnuts roasting (not really – haven’t gone that far) and my trusty Uggs are on my cosy feet.

Here are my top 5 tips for getting through a cold and rainy day, to ensure your spirits remain undampened and you stay roasty toasty all day long.

1. Uggs – wearing Uggs is like having your feet kissed by fairies (really warm cosy fairies). They are my outdoor slippers. So cosy. So soft. So heavenly.

Ugg Classic Short Boots, Chestnut – £150 – John Lewis

2. Cocoa – Green and Blacks do a stonking hot cocoa, which will warm your cockles, (where are one’s cockles?) and give you a crazy sugar high too, which is great for dancing – see point 3.

3. Music to dance to – forget squats and lunges – boogie your way through the day with some classic tunes. I’ve been listening to Belle and Sebastian today and I have shimmied my way through every track..(makes it harder to work, but I do like a challenge)

4. Bake! Bake something delicious, like these amazing Plum, Raspberry and Blackberry Bakewell Slices. My friend Red made these recently and they are ridiculously good. (RIDICULOUSLY GOOD). You’ll have so much fun mixing and sifting and eating your scrumptious wares, you won’t even notice the hail clamouring down outside, destroying your herb garden.

5. Go to the movies – this is one of my favourite things to do on a cold and rainy day. I’m off to see Frances Ha this evening… have you seen it yet? I’ll be wearing my Uggs.. I may even take a blanket…

And don’t despair… it’s forecast to be 30C on Thursday in London! Ding!

Win a trip to the Edinburgh Festival!

Hip pip, the Edinburgh Festival is officially around the corner and I for one can not wait! My tickets are booked, I’m all packed (complete lie) and am a bit fizzy with anticipation.

One of the highlights has always been the whizzbangingly spectacular fireworks display, which is being sponsored this year by Virgin Money. They have joined forces with Little Red (Virgin Atlantic’s new UK domestic service between London and Manchester, London and Aberdeen and London and Edinburgh) and are giving us the chance to win a trip to the Edinburgh International Festival!

Want to know what you can win? Me too. Here you go:

1. A pair of flights from Heathrow to Edinburgh 31st August – 2nd September
2. Two nights stay in the prestigious George Hotel, which lies in central Edinburgh
3. Two tickets for the closing Edinburgh Festival Fireworks Concert in the Ross Band Stand – read more here

The competition is running until the 9th August and to enter, just click here – it’s easy peasy.

p.s. Don’t forget to get yourself insured too, in case your luggage goes walkabout and you arrive with no pants.. (I am speaking from experience). Virgin Money Travel Insurance will sort you out in a jiffy.

Good luck to one and all… maybe I’ll see you there!

I’m wearing Sienna Miller’s Coat!

It’s true, it’s true, it’s true!! I’m wearing Sienna Miller’s coat! (Although just to dance around the flat in for a few minutes as it is SO HOT TODAY.)

How did it come to be that I am wearing Sienna Miller’s gorgeous Paul and Joe coat? Is that what you asked?

Well. Let me tell you my newest bestest kept (although not that well kept as I’m about to tell you) secret…

Please allow me to introduce (drumroll) – the ‘global luxury fashion wardrobe’ where the likes of you (you) and me (Poppy) can discover barely worn, luxury treasures once worn by a plethora of fashionistas and celebs, just like Sienna Miller (squeal!)

This is not me. This is a very beautiful model.

The website offers a self-upload option, as well as a VIP service, whereby the entire process is taken care of by the HEWI fairies, so the celebbies can sip champagne and not lift a finger. It’s no wonder they love it so much.. and thank heavens they do, as unique pieces by designers such as Celine, Valentino, Balenciaga, Hermes and Chanel often pop up on the website looking shiny and sparkly and beautiful and ahhhhhh…*sigh*

This very clever site was dreamt up by the super sonic Sharon Wolter-Ferguson. It began as a way for her to recycle her glamorous wardrobe amongst her friends via private auction. Many of the pieces had only ever been worn once and so were selling in tip top condition at a fraction of the original price. This proved so successful that it grew and grew and grew and GREW into a successful family run business, which has sold well over ten thousand items to date. Cor. All of these items were sold with no listing fees, through auctions, buy now or offers.

My new coat!

Included in this colossal number is my new, beautiful Paul and Joe coat. Previously owned and worn by Marvellous Miss Miller, it’s original price was £380. I managed to snag this stunner for £75! Hurruh!

Previous bargains have included a Chloe handbag and purse for £200, classic Louis Vitton Handbags from £335 and Ellie Saab – down to £2000 from £10,000…  You get the picture. There are serious bargains to be had.

Recently described in the press as a ‘verified eBay for designer clothes’, Hardly Ever Worn It has established itself firmly on the luxury fashion map.

The site is used by A-list celebrities, royalty, (ROYALTY!) socialites, fashion stylists, editors and fashionistas, all loving and using the discreet and personal service… so there are glamorous goodies galore.

But you’d better be quick.. they won’t be around for long.. (Nothing to do with me…)

I’m off to do one more twirl in my new coat… I can’t wait to wear it!

How to fold a fitted sheet

Pic from here

Pic from here

I can’t tell you how excited I was to discover this little nugget of housekeeping knowledge. No more tangled Poppy in a heap in on the floor. (No exaggeration. It’s emotional.)

Here is how you do it.

1. With the sheet inside out, place one hand in each of two adjacent corners.

2. Bring your right hand to your left, and fold the corner in your right hand over the one in your left, so the corner on top is right side out. Next, reach down and pick up the corner that is adjacent to the one that was in your right hand (it will be hanging in front), and fold it over the other two; this third corner will be inside out.

3. Bring the last corner up, and fold it over the others so it is right side out.

4. Lay the sheet flat, and straighten it into the shape shown above.

5. Fold the two edges in, folding the edge with elastic in first, so all elastic is hidden.

6. Fold the strip into a smaller rectangle.

7. Continue folding until rectangle is the size you want.

Ta da!
With oodles of thanks to Steph Modo and Martha Stewart

Not a Silly Billy
(and win a Tatty Devine necklace)

I LOVE receiving post and having exciting things plop onto my mat, like birthday cards, postcards… and flowers! (Thank you Debenhams..)

Although, what with technology and the tinternetty webby, often the fun and happy things like that get condensed into teeny texts and emails and we are left with just the yawny and scary things coming through the letterbox, like tax reminders (shiver) or council tax bills (actually starting to sweat now..) Not another bill

So THIS is why I am bringing to your attention one of the cleverest and happiest new discoveries for me so far – Not-Another-Bill

This switched on little company knows all too well how much it means to receive something lovely, and boy have they come up with a goodie. It’s the greatest Flugelbinder yet. (Have you seen Cocktail?) (If you haven’t you should watch it.) (But don’t judge me when you watch it – I can’t help it). (If you don’t know why I’m talking about the film Cocktail, you’ll have to watch it and then you’ll understand.) (No more brackets now.) Not another bill

Not-Another-Bill offers a glimmer of hope amidst the junky and scary mail, with the arrival of a monthly surprise (ooooh!) gift specially curated and  gorgeously packaged.

They also make it their business to collaborate with a number of different up and coming and established designers, brands and artists, to ensure their pressies are fresh, exciting and beautiful – and they really are. No tat or nonsense here. No siree.

Penhaligon's Scent Library

Penhaligon’s Scent Library

Past post pretties have included goodies from Chase and Wonder, Crispin Finn, Izola and US based brand, Prospector and Co.

I was lucky to receive my very own Not-Another-Bill surprise through the post, (you don’t have to be at home to receive it – the box fits right through the letterbox) in the shape of a gorgeous Penhaligon’s ‘scent library’.

For those of you who don’t know Penhaligon’s, it is a quintessential British fragrance house, founded in the 1860s by William Penhaligon, a Cornish barber who became perfumier and barber to the court of Queen Victoria. (Love British history titbits. Love love love.)

The scent library contains 10 phials of their most popular fragrances.. and they also included a lovely white cotton handkerchief, which depicts William and his creative chums.

It is the most lovely thing to have received and such a treat! It came perfectly packaged and made me feel special. I really loved it.

You can buy a subscription for yourself or as a gift. The cost of subscriptions vary, depending on how many months you want to run it for. You can also pay per month, (£17.50)  and they currently have a 3 month trial offer for £40.

Thank you so much to Not-Another-Bill for my wonderful present and for making me smile. I can’t shout loudly enough about this gorgeous little company, whose main objective seems to be to brighten up our days.

And they do it oh so well.

Peonies for Poppy

I had no idea that Debenhams delivered flowers. But they do. And they are gorgeous.

Debenhams have launched a new range of birthday flowers, with all sorts of pretty blooms, from deepwater roses and oriental lilies, to antique carnations and soft meadow flowers…

Last week my doorbell went (ding!) and there stood Mr Debenhams, clutching this rather pretty box..

‘Ooooo thank you!’ (said Poppy) and ran back inside, (was cold – was in a towel – was just out the shower – poor Mr Debenhams) to open it up..

And LOOK at the beautiful peonies that I was sent from them as a belated birthday pressie.. (this is the actual pic from their website..)

Peony Perfection – £19.99 and free delivery

This gorgeous bouquet of beautiful peonies is called ‘Peony Perfection’ and costs £19.99 with free delivery.

I popped them straight into a vase, complete with the flower food, and they are still sitting proudly on my coffee table. They are stunning.

Debenhams have also been rather clever and you’ll find that Belgian chocs and yummy things from The Sanctuary are included with some of the flowers – you can view their full range here.

Ding ding discount code!

I have a magical code for you that will get you 15% off any of the flowers in this birthday range! Hurruh! Just type in POPPY15 at checkout – it’s valid until 31st July 2013, so quicketyquick! Go and click on something beeoodiful!

I’m off to gaze at my peonies. It amazes me how much joy pretty fresh flowers can bring… especially when one didn’t buy them for oneself.

What a treat.
